Job Description: 
The General Practitioner (GP) at a Secure School in the UK provides comprehensive healthcare services to children and young people placed in secure care. The role focuses on the delivery of primary medical care, health assessments, and support to vulnerable students who may have a history of trauma, mental health issues, and complex health needs. The GP will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to provide holistic care and help manage the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of the students.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Primary Medical Care:
    • Provide general medical care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of various acute and chronic conditions.
    • Prescribe medications and treatments, ensuring appropriate follow-up for ongoing conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy.
    • Offer preventive care, including vaccinations, health screening, and advice on sexual health, nutrition, and lifestyle.
    • Conduct routine check-ups, monitor growth and development, and address specific concerns related to the physical well-being of young people.
  2. Health Assessments and Screenings:
    • Carry out initial health assessments for all new residents, including reviewing medical history, physical examination, and mental health status.
    • Conduct periodic health checks and age-appropriate screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, sexual health).
    • Provide fitness-to-work and fitness-to-school assessments, ensuring that young people are healthy and able to participate fully in education and activities.
  3. Mental Health and Emotional Support:
    • Identify and assess mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, and trauma-related conditions.
    • Work closely with mental health professionals (psychologists, counselors, psychiatrists) to ensure comprehensive care for young people.
    • Provide initial mental health support and guidance, including offering appropriate interventions or referrals when necessary.
    • Contribute to care plans, addressing both physical and mental health needs, and monitor progress in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
  4. Health Education and Promotion:
    • Deliver health education to young people in the school, focusing on important issues such as sexual health, substance use, healthy eating, and emotional well-being.
    • Lead or support group sessions on health-related topics, ensuring information is delivered in an age-appropriate and engaging manner.
    • Encourage positive lifestyle choices, including physical activity, hygiene, and self-care practices.
  5. Collaboration and Care Coordination:
    • Collaborate with teaching staff, youth workers, social workers, and mental health professionals to ensure holistic care for each student.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to discuss individual care plans and support the coordination of services.
    • Act as a key point of contact for health-related concerns and provide guidance to staff on medical and mental health issues.
    • Liaise with external healthcare providers, including hospitals, clinics, and specialist services, to ensure the continuity of care for students with complex health needs.
  6. Emergency and Crisis Care:
    • Provide immediate care for medical emergencies, injuries, and acute illness, including trauma and first aid.
    • Be involved in crisis management for mental health incidents, self-harm, or significant emotional distress.
    • Support the school in managing health crises, including the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary.
  7. Documentation and Record Keeping:
    • Maintain accurate, up-to-date medical records for all students in line with legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., Data Protection Act, General Data Protection Regulation – GDPR).
    • Complete medical reports, progress notes, and other documentation in a clear, concise, and timely manner.
    • Ensure that records are secure and confidential, adhering to standards of medical ethics and legal guidelines.
  8. Safeguarding and Wellbeing:
    • Follow safeguarding protocols and procedures, identifying and reporting any concerns regarding abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
    • Support the safeguarding of students by recognizing signs of vulnerability and trauma, and ensuring appropriate action is taken.
    • Engage with the safeguarding team and attend safeguarding meetings to contribute to decisions on care and protection.
  9. Health Management Plans and Support:
    • Develop individual health management plans for students with chronic conditions, mental health issues, or specific needs (e.g., diabetes management, medication adherence).
    • Provide advice and guidance to students on self-management strategies and how to take responsibility for their own health.
    • Offer support to parents and carers when appropriate, helping them understand the health and well-being of their child.
  10. Compliance and Quality Assurance:
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, safeguarding laws, and professional healthcare standards.
  • Participate in audits and quality assurance initiatives to assess the effectiveness of healthcare services within the Secure School.
  • Keep up to date with changes in healthcare guidelines, best practices, and policies relevant to the care of young people in secure settings.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Medical Degree: MBBS or equivalent, fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and licensed to practice in the UK.
  • Experience: Experience working with children and adolescents, preferably in a secure or youth-focused healthcare setting. Experience with vulnerable populations, such as those with mental health issues, learning difficulties, or a history of trauma, is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge: Sound understanding of child and adolescent health issues, including physical and mental health needs. Knowledge of safeguarding protocols and regulations governing healthcare in secure settings.
  • Clinical Skills: Competence in diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions in young people, from common illnesses to more complex health issues.
  • Mental Health Awareness: Familiarity with common mental health disorders in children and adolescents (e.g., depression, anxiety, conduct disorders, PTSD) and ability to provide initial mental health support.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children and young people, staff, and external healthcare providers.
  • Empathy and Compassion: Ability to approach young people with empathy and understanding, maintaining a non-judgmental and supportive attitude.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the well-being of the students and supporting the wider school environment.
